Usually, Windows 10 can detect and install drivers automatically using the array of product drivers built into the system and Windows Update. However, on occasion, you may have to update a device manually for a number of reasons. For instance, when a particular piece of hardware isn't recognized automatically, stops working after an upgrade, Windows Update installs a generic package, or you need to access a new feature or bug fix.
Whatever the reason, Windows 10 comes with several options to update a device driver, including using Windows Update, Device Manager, and using auto-update assistants from device manufacturers.
In this Windows 10 guide, we walk you through several ways to properly update hardware drivers on your computer. In addition, we also outline the steps to determine if the driver was updated successfully.

How to update drivers using Windows Update
Although it can take some time until manufacturers publish their latest driver updates in Windows Update, it's still the recommended method to download and install drivers, because packages in this channel have been tested, verified, and signed by Microsoft.
To quickly update device drivers using Windows Update, use these steps:
- Open Settings.
- Click on Update & Security.
- Click on Windows Update.
- Click the Check for updates button.
Once you complete the steps, if a driver is missing after an upgrade or clean installation, or a new driver has been published to improve an older version, it'll download and install automatically.
How to update drivers using Device Manager
Alternatively, you can also update drivers for a printer, wireless adapter, monitor, and other components using Device Manager.
Installing a driver from Microsoft
To update a device driver with Device Manager on Windows 10, use these steps:
- Open Start.
- Search for Device Manager and click the top result to open the experience.
- Double-click the category with the device you want to update.
- Right-click the device, and select the Update Driver option.
- Click the Search automatically for updated driver software option.
After you complete the steps, if a newer update is available, Device Manager will download and install the package automatically similar to Windows Update.
Installing a driver from the manufacturer
In the case that the driver isn't available through Windows Update, because it's too recent or available only in beta, you'll need to download and install the package from your manufacturer's support website manually.
When getting an update from a manufacturer support website, you should always follow their instructions, but if there are no instructions, double-click the '.exe' self-extracting package, or use this guide to extract the content of the '.zip' compressed file, and then use these steps:
- Open Start.
- Search for Device Manager and click the top result to open the experience.
- Double-click the category with the device you want to update.
- Right-click the device, and select the Update Driver option.
- Click the Browse my computer for driver software option.
- Click the Browse button.
- Select the main folder with the content you have extracted earlier.
- Click the OK button.
- Check the Include subfolders option to allow the wizard to find the correct '.inf' file with the instructions to update the driver.
- Click the Next button.
Once you complete the steps, the new driver will install on your computer to improve the overall experience with fixes, new functionalities, or new support depending on the update.
While you can manually update a component using this method, typically, you would use these steps to install older hardware. If you're dealing with an old printer, you should follow these steps.
How to update graphics drivers on Windows 10
Although it's often not recommended to update drivers, unless necessary, graphics manufacturers are continually rolling out updates to improve the experience and support of displays and fix problems with PC games.
If you need the most recent update for your graphics card, instead of waiting to arrive through Windows Update, you can use the graphics control panel available from Nvidia, AMD, and Intel to download and install the most up-to-date driver.
You can use the links below to download the software that corresponds to your brand:
- Nvidia GeForce Experience.
- AMD Radeon Software Adrenalin Edition.
- Intel Driver & Support Assistant.
After downloading the app for your graphics card, installing the software should be as easy as your typical next, next, next wizard, and then clicking the update button from the driver's section to install the latest driver.
Downloading graphics driver manually
If you don't want to add an extra piece of software on your computer, you can also download the latest graphics drivers directly from your manufacturer support website.
You can use the links below to download the latest graphics driver:
- Nvidia.
- AMD.
- Intel.
Once you download the package, make sure to follow your manufacturer instructions to complete the installation.
Downloading graphics driver automatically
If you're not sure the model of your graphics card, most companies also offer an assistant tool to check, download, and install the latest driver automatically.
You can use the links below to download and run the auto-detect and install driver assistant for your graphics card:
- Nvidia.
- AMD.
- Intel.
While on the website, click the download button for the assistant. Then double-click the executable, and continue with the on-screen directions to complete the driver update.
If you're using an integrated graphics card from Intel, you should remember that computer manufacturers can modify drivers to limit or expand their functionalities to operate smoothly in their devices. This means that if you have a desktop, laptop, or tablet from a company (such as Dell, HP, Lenovo, Asus, etc.), it's recommended to get the latest update from their support website, instead of Intel. Otherwise, it's likely that your device may experience unexpected behaviors, including missing features and configurations.
How to determine if a driver updated successfully
Once you install an update for a particular driver, you also want to make sure the latest version was applied correctly.
To see the driver information on Windows 10, use these steps:
- Open Start.
- Search for Device Manager and click the top result to open the experience.
- Double-click the category with the device you want to update.
- Right-click the device, and select the Properties option.
- Click the Driver tab.
- See the 'Driver Date' and 'Driver Version' information.
After you complete the steps, if these details match the information provided by the manufacturer, then you're running the latest version of the driver.

After installing Windows 10 from scratch, and sometimes after updating from a previous version of Windows, you may need to locate and install the latest Windows 10 drivers for your computer's hardware.
Because Windows 10 is Microsoft's newest operating system, manufacturers are determining what models of their hardware could work in Windows 10 and then (hopefully) regularly releasing Windows 10 compatible drivers.
Never Updated a Windows 10 Driver Before? See How to Update Drivers in Windows 10 for a full tutorial. A free driver updater software tool is another option you might want to consider, especially if you're new to this.
Two different versions of many drivers are available, both a 32-bit and 64-bit version. Make sure you install the correct one based on which version of Windows 10 you have installed!
Acer (Notebooks, Tablets, Desktops)
Any Windows 10 drivers by Acer, for your Acer computer, are available via the Acer Download Drivers & Manuals page.
Just search for your Acer PC model and then select Windows 10 from the Operating System drop-down box.
If your Acer computer model does not have any Windows 10 drivers available, especially if it is listed on the Acer Windows 10 Upgrade page, don't worry - it just means that the drivers Microsoft includes with Windows 10 probably work just fine.
Most Acer tablets, notebooks, and desktops that worked well with Windows 8 and Windows 7 will work just fine with Windows 10. If you do have issues, check Acer's Download Drivers & Manuals page regularly for new drivers.
The Acer Windows 10 FAQ page answers a lot of other basic questions about Windows 10 and your Acer computer. Take a look at our Acer Support overview for all of the relevant links.
AMD Radeon Driver (Video)
The latest AMD Radeon Windows 10 driver is the AMD Adrenalin 19.30.01.50 Suite (Released 2019-09-10).
These drivers are also called the AMD Catalyst Drivers and they include everything you need for your AMD/ATI video card to work in Windows 10.
Most AMD/ATI Radeon HD GPUs are supported in Windows 10 with these drivers, including those in the R9, R7, and R5 series, plus others. This includes both desktop and mobile GPUs.
AMD has also answered a number of basic questions about AMD video card compatibility with Windows 10 in their Windows 10 Driver & AMD Graphics Product Compatibility page.
ASUS Drivers (Motherboards)
Windows 10 drivers for ASUS motherboards can be downloaded via ASUS Support.
Click Download, enter your motherboard model number, and then filter by your operating system - Windows 10 in this case.
ASUS did a fantastic job of making it easy to find out how compatible your motherboard is with Windows 10 with their Ready for Windows 10 page.
Just sort by Intel or AMD and then locate your motherboard model number. Windows 10 might be supported with a beta or WHQL driver and may or may not need a BIOS upgrade. Everything you need to know is right there.
BIOSTAR Drivers (Motherboards & Graphics)
BIOSTAR doesn't keep a list of Windows 10 compatible motherboards or graphics cards, but you can find any Windows 10 drivers they do provide via BIOSTAR Support.
Expect most motherboards that work fine in Windows 8 to work equally fine in Windows 10, especially if you're using Microsoft's default drivers.
I do, however, expect more and more BIOSTAR-developed Windows 10 drivers to make it into their support area as time goes on.
Canon (Printers & Scanners)
Canon provides Windows 10 drivers for a number of their printer, scanner, and multi-function devices via Canon Support.
Just locate your product using the wizard on the screen and then filter by Operating System for Windows 10.
If you're just curious about Windows 10 compatibility for your Canon printer or another device, they put together a really easy to use Canon Windows Compatibility tool that makes that really easy.
Find your printer from that page, tap or click the +, and check for a green checkmark or more detailed information about Windows 10 compatibility.
If you didn't see your Canon device on the other list, check out the Canon Windows 10 Upgrade page, which lists every model that Canon will not be working to ensure Windows 10 compatibility with.
Don't worry if your device is on that list - Microsoft probably supports your printer or scanner naively (i.e. with their own basic drivers). That or the Windows 8 driver already available from Canon will also work for Windows 10.
Creative Sound Blaster Drivers (Audio)
The most recent Creative Sound Blaster drivers for Windows 10 are listed, along with download links, on their Windows 10 Software Availability Chart.
Just scroll down until you find your sound card name or model number and then download the drivers via the link you're given.
If no Windows 10 driver is available for your Sound Blaster device, you'll see instead an Estimated Available Date. Take note of that and check back later.
If you can't find your Creative hardware anywhere on this page, please know that Microsoft's default Windows 10 audio drivers will probably work, but there's no guarantee.
Other Creative-made devices are listed on this page, too, with their respective Windows 10 compatibility details. As of the last update to this list, I saw external speakers, headsets, webcams, and even some Create software listed.

The latest Intel Chipset Windows driver for Windows 10 is version 10.1.1.45 (Released 2019-03-20).
Intel Chipset drivers aren't 'drivers' in the typical sense - they're just a collection of informational updates for the operating system (Windows 10 in this case) that help it properly identify motherboard-integrated hardware that it's probably already working with just fine.
Motherboards by any manufacturer with Atom, Celeron, Pentium, 9 Series, Core M, and 2/3/4 Generation Intel Core chipsets are all supported.
